Hello,
I'm having a Halloween Party. Can anyone give me any good ideas on inexpensive decorations? Most of what's available in shops seems really overpriced or plastic.

Re: Decoration Ideas
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 6:40 AMHere are some:
Cover your furniture with lots of black, red or purple fabric (stretch velvet is my favorite for doing this).
Use a lot of candles of different sizes, colors and shapes. Group them and they will give more light than only one by itself.
Buy dry ice; prepare a bowl as your table centerpiece. Fill it with hot water and drop some dry ice on it. Lots of fun!! Be careful not to hurt yourself with the dry ice. It can burn your skin. Use gloves.
If you have time, there are some Halloween decorating ideas for DIY at the Michaels web page (www.michaels.com). Just type Halloween on the search engine. These are my favorites:

If you can find spider web decorations (the white ones that look like cotton), they are usually very cheap, easy to use and very realistic.
Have fun at your party!!

Sun, April 6, 2008 - 10:21 AMHi Zahira,
It might be too late? Here is some info. if you still need it.
Michaels and Jo Ann's Fabrics have nice items for good prices. Yes, alot of stuff is plastic but that keeps the price down, I have collected some realistic heavier pieces and it was not cheap. I find you don’t need a lot of Halloween stuff form the store to create the Halloween mood. You can use normal everyday items and get creative.
First decide on a creepy theme – vampire’s lair, a witch’s cottage, a haunted cemetery, etc. Then decorate according to your chosen theme. Use your imagination. I always dress as a witch each year, so my theme is designed around a witch.
Some examples for a witch theme:
- Buy a few extra brooms for the hallway,
- A bubbling cauldron,
- Create an apothecary table set up with goodies to create “spells.”
- Cheesecloth and white tulle from the fabric store and soaked in tea (give it an aged look) then rip the edges and drape over the
curtains and furniture.
- I used a simple bowl with over-filled with shinny red apples and with calligraphy pen wrote on table card- “poison apples.”
Martha Stewart has tons of ideas. I tried her idea for gluing green glitter over plastic skeleton bones and then displayed them on a cake stand along with the party food on the buffet table. Also buy a few different sized glass jars with lids and containers from Michaels or Jo- Annes and fill them with colored water --- put spaghetti (intestines), a head of lettuce (brain), plastic bugs, snakes, or lizards in them and make apothecary specimen jars. You can use regular food coloring in the water. To make it look like blood mix red with a touch of blue. I filled several tall glass containers with the bloody looking water and put floating candles in it. I also another idea from Martha for the witches curtain-made from a black trash bag. It looked great and how simple it that? Be sure to get LOTS of candles – your lighting is very important in setting the overall mood.
You can see a couple of examples of my creations here on this tribes photo gallery-Good luck and have fun!
